Alaska The Last Frontier Cast and the Kilcher Family Tree

TLDR: Alaska: The Last Frontier followed the Kilcher family on their Homer homestead from December 29, 2011 to November 13, 2022, and singer Jewel is part of that family tree. Here is who is related to whom, which cast members faced trouble on or off camera, and what is known about why it ended. Checked October 27, 2026.

The Kilcher family tree is bigger than the opening credits ever let on. Cousins, in-laws and grown children kept turning up on screen, and most viewers never quite worked out who belonged to whom.

This guide sorts it out using Wikipedia’s cast list and reporting from the Alaska Dispatch News, Distractify and Wikipedia’s page on Jewel.

A Swiss Homesteader Started the Family Here

The Kilchers descend from Yule and Ruth Kilcher, Swiss immigrants who settled near Homer, Alaska. Yule later served as a delegate to the state’s constitutional convention and then as a state senator, according to Wikipedia.

The show was filmed at Fritz Creek, about 11 miles outside Homer, per a 2013 Anchorage Daily News report cited by Wikipedia. The family farmed, hunted and got ready for winter without much modern heating.

Atz and Otto Are the Two Patriarchs

Atz Kilcher is one of Yule’s sons, and he is Jewel’s father. His brother Otto and Otto’s wife Charlotte anchor the other main household.

Atz’s children include Atz Lee, Shane and Jewel, and Atz Lee’s wife Jane is also in the cast. Wikipedia’s starring list adds Bonnie Kilcher-Dupree.

Eivin Kilcher and his wife Eve round out the cast list. We have not confirmed exactly which branch Eivin comes from, so we are leaving him off the tree for now.

Jewel Appeared in Six Episodes

Wikipedia says Jewel appeared in six episodes between 2016 and 2017. She grew up near Homer after her parents divorced in 1981, living with her father in a home without running water or central heat.

She and Atz performed together as a duo in roadhouses and hotels, and he taught her to yodel.

A Helicopter Hunt Led to Charges in 2015

On July 13, 2015, prosecutors charged Atz Lee, his wife Jane and the production company Wilma TV with one misdemeanor count each of using a helicopter to take big game, per the Anchorage Daily News. The hunt took place around September 2014 and was filmed for the show.

The Homer News reported that Wilma TV pleaded guilty to an amended charge and was fined $17,500 on February 16, 2016. The charges against the Kilchers were dismissed, and they agreed to testify against the company if needed.

The Family Has Survived Some Frightening Moments

Atz Lee’s fall near Otter Cove and Otto’s run-ins with a blood clot and an angry steer all happened in the public eye. Our separate guide sorts the real stories from the death hoaxes in who died on Alaska: The Last Frontier.

How the Show Ended in 2022

The last episode aired on November 13, 2022. Season 11 had six episodes, compared with 12 in season 10, which had aired between October 2020 and January 2021.

We found no statement from Discovery, the producers or the family explaining why. Wikipedia gives no reason either, so we will not guess at one.

The infobox gives 176 episodes, though the season counts on the same page add up to 175.
