TLDR: We found no report of a Kilcher cast member dying on or after Alaska: The Last Frontier, and the death headlines about Otto and others have been hoaxes. Otto, Atz Lee, Atz Sr. and Shane Kilcher did all have serious injuries or health scares, covered here. Checked October 27, 2026.
Every few months a headline claims a Kilcher has died, and every few months it turns out to be nothing. The family does have a long record of frightening accidents, which is probably why the rumors keep sticking.
Here is what is actually documented about each one. For the cast list and the family tree, see our Kilcher family guide.
Otto Kilcher Has Been a Target of Death Hoaxes
Distractify reports that Otto has been a frequent target of death hoaxes, especially after a blood clot in 2016. Viewers saw the clot and a hernia surgery in season 6.
He chose a local anesthetic over general anesthesia, reasoning that the general kind puts a heavy load on the liver. In a Facebook Live on November 11, 2016, he said being laid up was hard.
Distractify adds that he often interrupted his recovery by pushing himself too hard. In another episode, it says, he risked his own well-being to save a paralyzed cow.
A Steer Put Otto in Danger in 2022
In the season 11 premiere on October 9, 2022, a steer injured Otto in a snowstorm and emergency responders were called. Distractify says the full extent of his injuries is unknown.
A video he posted after the premiere shows him heading into the snow toward a group of oxen, saying hello to his friends in case he did not come back. The article does not confirm which animal attacked him, and he has since appeared on horseback.
Atz Lee Kilcher Fell From a Cliff in 2015
The Anchorage Daily News reported that Atz Lee fell near Otter Cove on August 10, 2015, citing the Alaska State Troopers dispatch. He was airlifted to a hospital because he was too badly hurt to be brought out by boat.
Distractify says his wife Jane announced a broken arm, shoulder, ankle and hip, crushed ribs and two punctured lungs. Atz Lee later wrote that he had also broken his shoulder blade and more than a dozen ribs.
He posted that he was grateful to be home in late 2015, and a year later he said the recovery had been hard but he was doing well. The show documented his injuries and recovery, and the family returned for season 8.
His age is reported two ways, 38 by the Alaska State Troopers dispatch and the Anchorage Daily News, and 42 in a later Distractify piece.
He Also Sued the Resort Over the Fall
Distractify, citing The Blast, says Atz Lee sued the Otter Cove resort in 2017 for $100,000. He claimed it did not warn guests about the cliff edge or prevent falls.
The resort denies liability and says any injury came from his own negligence. We found no report of how the case ended.
Atz Kilcher Sr. Had a Health Scare in 2020
Distractify reported in December 2020 that Atz Sr. went for a CT scan on the show after stomach discomfort. Earlier that season he had a possible COVID-19 scare and emergency hernia surgery.
A December 6 episode showed him wondering whether cancer was behind the bulge in his stomach. The article never says he has cancer, and the episode ended without results.
Shane Kilcher Broke His Back in 2017
Starcasm transcribed the official show Facebook video saying Shane fell from a ladder while working on his cabin. It describes a horizontal fracture across much of his L2 vertebra.
That is a fan site rather than a news outlet, and the original video was removed, so we treat the details as unconfirmed.
Friends of the Family Have Died
Wikipedia’s episode summaries mention the family burying a friend in season 3 and saying goodbye to Bruce Willard in season 5. None of them is listed as cast, and no cause of death is given.
As of October 27, 2026, we found no report of a Kilcher cast member dying through the final episode on November 13, 2022.
Why the Death Rumors Keep Coming Back
A show built around chainsaws, cliffs, cattle and long Alaska winters gives rumor sites plenty to work with. Each scare, from a cliff fall to a CT scan, tends to turn into a headline that hints at the worst.
The best check is the family’s own social media and the show’s reporting, and for the bigger picture, see the Kilcher family tree.
