Room 222 premiered on ABC on September 17, 1969, created by James L. Brooks, who’d go on to co-create The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Taxi before writing and directing The Simpsons and Broadcast News.
It followed history teacher Pete Dixon at the fictional, racially integrated Walt Whitman High School in Los Angeles, running 113 episodes across five seasons.
Early ratings were weak enough that ABC nearly canceled the show after its first season, before a wave of 1970 Emmy nominations changed the network’s mind entirely. The show went on to win Outstanding New Series that year, alongside acting awards for two of its stars.
The Principal Later Played One of Comedy’s Most Beloved Dads
Michael Constantine played Principal Seymour Kaufman, dryly humorous and perpetually preoccupied with his duties, across all five seasons.
Decades later, Constantine became a household name to an entirely new generation playing Kostas “Gus” Portokalos, the Windex-wielding Greek father in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, a role he reprised in its 2016 sequel.
Constantine’s career had actually started decades before Room 222 too, with a small but memorable role in the 1961 film The Hustler. He died on August 31, 2021, at age 94, from natural causes.
Pete Dixon Died Working, Still Fighting for Television Integration
Lloyd Haynes played Pete Dixon, an idealistic Black history teacher, in a role that made him one of the first Black actors to lead a network drama series.
Off screen, Haynes was outspoken about the industry’s remaining blind spots, telling the Los Angeles Times in 1970, “There’s unconscious segregation… You’ll see extras lined up, Black with Black and White with White.”
Haynes also founded an Education Through Aviation program in Santa Monica that introduced students to flying, work Congress formally recognized in 1972.
After Room 222 ended, he kept working steadily, including a recurring role on Dynasty and a final part as Mayor Ken Morgan on the soap opera General Hospital.
Haynes was diagnosed with lung cancer and kept commuting from his home in Coronado to Hollywood for filming until shortly before his death on January 1, 1987, at age 52. Co-star Denise Nicholas attended his small private funeral in San Diego County.
Liz McIntyre Came From the Civil Rights Movement, Not Just Acting School
Denise Nicholas played school guidance counselor Liz McIntyre, Pete Dixon’s on-screen love interest, earning three consecutive Golden Globe nominations for the role.
Before acting, she’d been an early member of the Free Southern Theater and the Negro Ensemble Company, using performance as a direct extension of her Civil Rights Movement activism in the 1960s.
She also had a real career as a songwriter, penning “Can We Pretend,” which her then-husband, singer Bill Withers, recorded on his 1974 album +’Justments. Nicholas went on to a long career including a lead role on In the Heat of the Night and a published novel, Freshwater Road, in 2005.
The Student Teacher Was Discovered by Accident
Karen Valentine played idealistic student teacher Alice Johnson, winning the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 1970.
Director Gene Reynolds discovered her almost by accident, noticing her fumbling nervously through her audition and realizing the awkwardness itself was genuinely funny rather than a liability.
Valentine stayed a familiar television face for years afterward, including a semi-regular panelist spot on Hollywood Squares and her own short-lived sitcom.
