Since 2024, CBS has aired a completely different series also called Matlock, developed by Jennie Snyder Urman and starring Kathy Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a wealthy retired lawyer who talks her way back into a prestigious law firm to investigate a personal tragedy tied to her daughter’s death.

The two shows share nothing beyond a surname and a courtroom setting.

The reboot has been a genuine hit in its own right, premiering with a sneak peek in September 2024, earning a second season that premiered in October 2025, and a Season 3 renewal in January 2026. But it draws from the original 1986 series only in the loosest sense, borrowing the premise of a folksy, underestimated attorney and flipping the lead character’s gender entirely.

The Investigator Who Almost Didn’t Make It to Season 4

Kene Holliday played private investigator Tyler Hudson for the show’s first three seasons, and his exit is the classic cast’s most dramatic behind-the-scenes story.

Two Lawyers Who Left Rather Than Relocate

When production moved from the West Coast to North Carolina, both Julie Sommars (prosecutor Julie March) and Nancy Stafford (attorney Michelle Thomas) chose to leave the show rather than uproot their families, closing out two of the most prominent legal characters on the show within the same production shift.

Sommars was already a decorated actress well before Matlock, having won a Golden Globe in 1970 for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series for her starring role in The Governor & J.J. After stepping away from acting, she built a second career in California civic life entirely removed from show business, serving on the state’s Judicial Performance Commission and its Board of Governors from 2000 to 2003.

She was married to her fourth husband, John Harris Karns, from 1984 until his death in 2023, and is a mother of three who has kept a notably private profile since retiring from both acting and public service.

Stafford, a former Miss Florida who competed in the 1977 Miss America pageant before her acting career even began, pivoted toward Christian ministry and media after leaving the show.

She hosted the syndicated fashion and beauty series Main Floor for over a decade, from 1994 to 2005, and authored faith-based books including Beauty by the Book and The Wonder of His Love.

She still appears in Hallmark holiday movies and faith-based films like I’m Not Ashamed, sits on the Biola University Studio Task Force, and has been married to musician and pastor Larry Myers since 1989.

Charlene Matlock Was Recast Mid-Show, and So Was Her Sister

Ben Matlock’s daughter Charlene was originally played by Lori Lethin before Linda Purl took over the role starting in Season 4, giving Purl the longest run of any actress in the part for the remainder of the show.

She’s stayed a working actor ever since, recognizable to modern audiences as Pam’s mother, Helene Beesly, on The Office, and has more recently made headlines for her real-life relationship with Dallas star Patrick Duffy. Brynn Thayer joined as Matlock’s other daughter, Leanne MacIntyre, arriving already a soap opera star in her own right after eight years playing Jenny Wolek on One Life to Live, a role that had earned her a Daytime Emmy nomination.

She kept working steadily after Matlock too, with guest roles on Murder, She Wrote, Cold Case, and How to Get Away with Murder, plus a recurring stretch on General Hospital.
