Years after the divorce, Bassich suffered a serious hip injury while trying to free a snow machine stuck in the snow. The injury developed into two separate infections, one in the muscle and one in the bone, serious enough that Alaska’s own medical facilities couldn’t treat it.
He left the state for treatment in Florida, missing roughly six months of his life on the river while he recovered. It was during that same stretch that he reconnected with Denise Becker, a trauma nurse he’d first met on a canoe trip two years earlier, who happened to be working at the facility treating him.
