TLDR: Aron and Jen Toland bought Eliguk Lake Lodge, an abandoned fly-in fishing lodge in British Columbia, in March 2016. They star in Mountain Men: Wild North and prepare every spring for wildfire. Checked October 23, 2026.
The Tolands are the British Columbia entry in the Wild North cast. Their home is a lodge they brought back from the brush.
Here is how they got to Eliguk Lake, how they live and what the fire seasons have been like.
From Northern Ontario to the B.C. Interior
Outdoor Canada reported in 2018 that the Tolands are from northern Ontario and moved to Kelowna about 20 years earlier. They spent five years searching for the right spot, per the Outdoor Canada story.
Buying Eliguk Lake Lodge in 2016
They bought the abandoned off-grid lodge in March 2016. It was overgrown, and they were surprised by how much work it needed.
Eliguk Lake has a history as a fly-in fishing spot for wild rainbow trout, and they set out to revive that. Aron is a skilled mechanic and Jennifer is an accomplished chef.
Life at the Lake
HISTORY says the couple hunt, fish and grow roughly 90 percent of their own food. Aron mills his own lumber and is building a new lodge by hand.
HISTORY says they moved about seven years ago, while Outdoor Canada dates the purchase to 2016, so the dates differ by a few years.
Advice From People Who Did It
Jennifer told Outdoor Canada that a couple going off-grid must be ready to give up comforts and handle solitude. She said the partners have to be best friends.
Aron advised buying the best equipment and keeping spare parts, since help is far away. The couple also learned to forage for edible and medicinal plants.
The Furthermost Outpost Podcast
The couple host a podcast called Furthermost Outpost, which has 23 episodes on Apple Podcasts. Topics include winter and spring preparations, wildfire mitigation, long supply runs, wolves and bears and hosting guests.
One episode describes a seven-day, six-night skills course at the lake covering navigation and off-grid systems. The second season is described as covering the logistics of remote life and filming Mountain Men: Wild North.
The Wildfire Years
HISTORY says a fire nearly destroyed the homestead three years ago, so each spring they clear firebreaks and fallen timber. CTV News reported in July 2023 that Aron and Jennifer Toland were sleeping on a barge while a wildfire burned a few kilometres from their West Chilcotin lodge.
Regional papers ran headlines about a Gatcho Complex fire about 10 kilometres from a wilderness lodge in the area and an evacuation order for Eliguk Lake, though the CTV report does not name the lodge. See the CTV News report.
Back on Camera
In “A Fine Line,” Aron and Jen work to clear hazardous fallen trees while protecting their home from another wildfire. The rest of the cast is in our Mountain Men: Wild North guide.
