The Vintage Years, the Unaired Pilot That Became Falcon Crest

TLDR: Falcon Crest began as The Vintage Years, a pilot filmed in spring 1981 that CBS never aired. CBS asked Earl Hamner Jr. to make it more like Dallas, and the script was rewritten, the pilot reshot and several actors replaced. Checked October 23, 2026.

Before Falcon Crest became a Friday night hit, it was a pilot called The Vintage Years that CBS never aired. Different actors played several of the key roles, and the story was rewritten before the series reached the screen.

Here is where the idea came from, who was in the first version and what changed. For the series itself, see our Falcon Crest guide, and for the creator, Earl Hamner Jr..

Two Accounts of Where the Idea Began

On his website, Hamner says his business manager bought him a vineyard in the Napa Valley while The Waltons was a hit. It never made money, and he said the experience gave him the idea, as he tells it on earlhamner.com.

In a Television Academy Foundation interview quoted by TVLine, Hamner said he read a Time article about the wine industry, visited Napa Valley and came back and created characters. The accounts credit different sparks, and both may be true.

A Family Drama Meant to Echo The Waltons

The show began as a family drama about a wine-making clan.

Wikipedia describes Hamner’s later framing as the flip side of The Waltons, with a family infected by wealth where the Waltons had been threatened by poverty.

The Unaired Pilot

The Vintage Years was filmed in the spring of 1981 and never aired. CTVA dates it to April 1981 and credits Alexander Singer as director and Malcolm R. Harding as producer.

The Napa Valley Register says the pilot was shot in the living room of Miravalle, the Victorian mansion at Spring Mountain Vineyard.

Who Was in the Pilot

Jane Wyman played Angela Channing in both versions, but Clu Gulager played Chase Gioberti and Samantha Eggar played Maggie. Robert Foxworth and Susan Sullivan took those parts in the series.

Michael Swan played Richard Channing in the pilot, and David Selby replaced him from the second season. Abby Dalton’s character was named Dorcas in the pilot and Julia in the series.

Lorenzo Lamas, William R. Moses and Jamie Rose played Lance, Cole and Vickie in both versions. Chao-Li Chi’s pilot character was named Lee Fong, and Emma Channing did not appear in the pilot.

What CBS Asked to Change

CBS asked Hamner to make the show more like Dallas, the network’s biggest hit at the time. The script was rewritten, the pilot was reshot, and several cast members were replaced.

In the pilot, Richard was Angela’s biological son. In the series he began as the illegitimate son of Angela’s ex-husband, Douglas Channing.

Jane Wyman Reshapes Angela

Wikipedia says Wyman wore a wig in the pilot and played Angela as too nasty and one-dimensional. She pushed to reshape the character into a tough businesswoman capable of love.

TVLine quotes Wyman calling the first pilot dreadful and saying she virtually produced the second. She wanted Angela tougher.

From Pilot to Premiere

The series premiered on December 4, 1981, with the episode “In His Father’s House,” in the Friday 10 p.m. slot after Dallas.

It ran for nine seasons, the same length as The Waltons, and both shows were produced by Lorimar for CBS. For the family that started it all, see our guide to the cast of The Waltons.
