Head of the Class premiered on ABC on September 17, 1986, created by Michael Elias and Rich Eustis, following a group of gifted students in the Individualized Honors Program at fictional Millard Fillmore High School in Manhattan.

The show ran five seasons and 114 episodes, built almost entirely around the chemistry of one unusually stable ensemble cast.

This Isn’t the HBO Max Version

In 2021, HBO Max released its own Head of the Class, starring Isabella Gomez as a new teacher named Alicia leading a modern, diverse version of the same honors program.

Gomez had come directly from playing Elena Alvarez on the Netflix revival of One Day at a Time, giving the reboot a real lineage even though its story had nothing to do with the original.

Robin Givens, who’d starred as student Darlene in the classic version, returned in a recurring role as the mother of one of the new students, a nice piece of continuity that reviewers noted made essentially no difference to the actual plot.

The reboot was cancelled after a single ten-episode season, unable to recapture what made the original work.

The Original Teacher Quit, and They Replaced Him With a Completely Different Guy

Howard Hesseman played Charlie Moore, the laid-back substitute teacher at the center of the classic show, for its first four seasons. Hesseman quit after Season 4 specifically to pursue a film career, and rather than recast the same role, the show simply wrote in a different teacher entirely.

Scottish comedian Billy Connolly joined for the fifth and final season as Billy MacGregor, a new substitute filling the same basic role.

It’s a genuinely unusual solution to a cast departure, swapping the entire character rather than pretending a new actor was playing the same one, and Connolly’s version later spun off into its own short-lived series, Billy.

An Oscar Winner Was Sitting Quietly in the Background the Whole Time

Jonathan Ke Quan, already famous to audiences as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Data in The Goonies, appeared in a smaller role on Head of the Class as one of the honors students.

After the show ended, Quan stepped away from acting almost entirely for roughly two decades, working instead as a stunt choreographer and fight coordinator behind the camera.

He returned to acting in 2022 for the film Everything Everywhere All at Once, and the following year won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, a genuinely remarkable full-circle arc for a former child star who’d once been just another face in a Manhattan classroom set.

The Rest of the Class Went On to Genuinely Different Careers

Brian Robbins, who played student Eric Mardian, went on to a substantial career as a director and producer before eventually becoming president and CEO of Paramount Pictures, running the very kind of studio that once employed him as a teenage sitcom actor.

Dan Schneider, who played Dennis Blunden, became one of the most prolific children’s television producers of his generation, creating a long run of hit shows for Nickelodeon.

Robin Givens, who played Darlene Merriman, built a substantial acting career afterward across film and television that continued well past the original show’s run, long before her return to the same role in the 2021 reboot decades later.
