Michele Lee was born June 24, 1942, in Los Angeles, and became a genuine Broadway performer at just 19, starring opposite Robert Morse and Rudy Vallee in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, a role she later reprised in the film version.

She earned a 1974 Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Musical for Seesaw, building real stage credentials years before television ever cast her as Karen Fairgate.

A Producer Recognized Her at a Party, Then Recast the Show Around Her

Co-executive producer Michael Filerman spotted Lee at a party while Knots Landing was still being developed and told creator David Jacobs she was “Karen Fairgate in the flesh.”

Jacobs had just watched her deliver a straight dramatic performance in Bud and Lou, playing Lou Costello’s long-suffering wife, and agreed almost immediately.

Jacobs later described exactly why the character worked as the show’s emotional center: “Karen is the tent pole. She says the things I want to say. She’s the voice of the viewer.”

Her Real Divorce Happened in Sync With Her Character’s

Lee married actor James Farentino in 1966, and the marriage was already under real strain by the time she joined the show in 1979.

Her separation from Farentino lined up almost exactly with her on-screen husband, played by Don Murray, leaving the series, meaning Lee became a single mother in her real life at nearly the same moment her character did on screen.

“When I was a single parent in the third or second season, I was a single parent in my personal life,” she later said. The overlap became literal in one particular scene: when her character removed her wedding ring on camera in a 1982 episode, Lee used her own actual ring for the moment.

She and Farentino divorced in 1983, sharing one son, David. Despite the difficulty of the split, the two eventually became genuinely close again, regularly referring to each other as “my former” rather than “ex,” and Lee remained close enough with Farentino’s later wife that the three of them shared dinners and holidays together. When Farentino died in 2012 following a long illness, Lee was at his side.

She Set a Real Record No One Has Matched Since

Lee appeared in all 344 episodes of the show’s fourteen-season run, a genuine record for the greatest number of consecutive appearances by a leading actress in an hour-long primetime drama.

As budget cuts intensified in the final seasons and other cast members were asked to sit out episodes, Lee specifically declined to be written out, reportedly willing to appear without pay rather than break her own streak.

Starting in 1989, she also began directing episodes of the show herself, taking on real creative control behind the camera in addition to her role in front of it.

She won the Soap Opera Digest Award for Best Lead Actress three times, in 1988, 1991, and 1992, and earned a 1982 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

She Kept Working Steadily for Decades Afterward

Lee remarried in 1987, to producer Fred Rappoport, a relationship with its own professional overlap since Rappoport worked at CBS during her own run on the network’s biggest soap.

She’s continued acting well past Knots Landing, with credits including Along Came Polly, Will & Grace, and Family Guy, and returned to play Karen one final time for the 1997 reunion miniseries, Knots Landing: Back to the Cul-de-Sac.
