Every small town needs a man behind the counter who knows everyone’s business and keeps quiet about most of it. For Hooterville, that was Sam Drucker, and the actor in the apron was a Stanford drama graduate named Frank Cady.
He is the single face that links all three Paul Henning comedies. Here is who he was and how a bald character actor from Susanville ended up on three hit shows at once.

At Stanford he studied drama, wrote for the Chaparral humor magazine and met his future wife, Shirley Jones, according to Stanford Magazine. They married in 1940.
Wikipedia says he apprenticed at the Westminster Theatre in London after graduation and made an early BBC television appearance in late 1938.

How Did Frank Cady Start Acting?
After the war he moved to Los Angeles, where an agent saw him in a local play. He began working in film and television in the late 1940s.
He joked that his lack of hair helped. In a 1959 interview he said, “at 24 my head was as shiny as a cueball on a billiard table,” and that he “got juicy roles right from the start.”
Frank Cady Before Hooterville
Film fans may spot him in Hitchcock’s Rear Window, where he is the man on the fire escape. Wikipedia also lists Ace in the Hole, The Asphalt Jungle and When Worlds Collide.

Wikipedia calls him the only actor to play a recurring character on three sitcoms at the same time. Susanville Stuff puts his total at over 300 episodes.

What Happened After the Shows Ended?

In a 1995 interview he said, “You get typecast.” He admitted people remembered him for “those shows” rather than other good work.
