She Reinvented Hilary Banks in the Audition Room
Parsons wasn’t initially sold on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air‘s concept at all. “I remember my first reactions being, ‘Oh, God, it’s a sitcom with a rapper? Like, what’s that?'” she said.
The role of Hilary was originally written as a polished, model-type character, but Parsons decided that wasn’t a look she could pull off convincingly, so she reshaped the character into something else entirely: a real, self-centered brat.
That choice defined the character for six seasons, and Parsons has said reunions with her old castmates fall right back into rhythm decades later. “Whenever the cast all gets together, inevitably Will will be like, ‘We should do this all the time,'” she said. “And we all look at him like, ‘It’s you that’s hard to nail down!’ It’s like we all just pick up where we left off.”
Her Mother Planted the Idea That Became Her Second Career
Parsons had been quietly writing short fiction and researching African American history throughout her time on the show, an interest she credits partly to her mother, a librarian who introduced her to stories like that of Henry “Box” Brown, a man who escaped slavery by literally mailing himself to freedom in a wooden crate.
After becoming pregnant with her daughter, Lana, in the early 2000s, Parsons decided it was time to act on the idea seriously.
She Built a Real Nonprofit From That Idea
In 2005, Parsons founded Sweet Blackberry, a nonprofit producing animated short films that bring lesser-known stories of Black achievement to children.
The organization has released work including The Journey of Henry “Box” Brown, Garrett’s Gift, and Dancing in the Light: The Janet Collins Story, narrated by celebrities including Alfre Woodard, Chris Rock, and Queen Latifah.
She expanded into children’s publishing too, releasing her first novel, How High the Moon, in 2019, about a light-skinned Black girl growing up in the Jim Crow-era South, a book author Jacqueline Woodson called “historical and timely, captivating, and lovely.”

In mid-December 2025, a friend sent Parsons a screenshot of former President Barack Obama reading her newest book, Flying Free: How Bessie Coleman’s Dreams Took Flight, aloud. “At first I was skeptical, because in this new age of AI, I wasn’t even sure if it was real,” she said, describing the moment as “the best early Christmas present ever” once she confirmed it genuinely was him.
Now based in Providence, Rhode Island, Parsons has largely stepped away from acting to focus on her writing and advocacy work. “I love writing and bringing stories to kids in an organic and immersive way,” she said. “And I feel so lucky to be doing something that I love so much.”
